RESTORATION :: RECOMMITTED

De stadsschuur (RDH office)

Location:

Middelburg

Year:

2001

The Stadsschuur (literally 'town barn') was built at the end of the 16th century. Following some repair work during the 18th century, the building underwent a large-scale reconstruction around 1900, giving it its present appearance. Until the mid-1990s the Stadsschuur served as a warehouse and workspace for the Public Works Department of the local council. The building did, however, show signs of dilapidation. Overloading and deathwatch beetle had weakened the wooden construction. In addition to these problems with stability, the roof and walls were also in need of an overhaul. The building’s interior has undergone a thorough renovation, preserving its roominess. Toilets, meeting rooms and technical installations have been introduced within a glass column. By coupling the other functionalities in the building with a new staircase and the entrance, these could be situated away from the walls. The Stadsschuur now houses a branch of RDH.
