Moermond Castle

Location:

Renesse

Year:

2004

Moermond Castle is used for meetings, for more informal gatherings and for parties. With these functions in mind, the assignment was to add a ‘garden room’ to the castle. Contrast played a key role in the design. It had to be clear that this extension really was a modern addition, a building of our times. The garden room has been constructed under a roof that covers the complete annex as a sort of cap. The garden room itself comprises an ‘enclosed’ space combined with a transparent link to the castle. The enclosed corner is the contraform of the corner of the castle where the garden room has been introduced. This structure made it possible to locate bar and buffet services in the corner without disturbing the monumental wall of the castle, and to reveal the garden to the visitor in a more gradual way. A conscious choice has been made for contrasting brickwork to allow the castle’s original brickwork to come more into its own.
