New housing construction plan Stadsveste in Middelburg

Location:

Middelburg

Year:

2003-2004

In the 1990s, the well-known architect Ralph Erskine drew up a master plan for the area around the Molenwater in Middelburg. RDH developed a residential construction plan for the location, formerly the site of the gas factory and the Zeetex complex. To fit into the historic structure of the centre of Middelburg, the houses were designed along narrow, car-free streets and squares. The construction consists of a combination of apartments and townhouses with a high density. High studio residences were built on the large open space near the Molenwater, offering extra space for home offices. One of the building blocks is located around a parking garage, as polluted soil blocked plans to build underground.
The materials used in construction resemble the traditional materials used in the historic surroundings. The base consists of different coloured brickwork with white painted window frames. Painted masonry and zinc fixtures also provide traditional accents. A characteristic of the surroundings is the ‘half pointed roof’, which has been applied in various combinations.
