The Schumanstede is part of a 1960s’ social housing project in Goes. The neighbourhood is made up of many identical smaller neighbourhoods that were isolated from each other along the neighbourhood’s main traffic thoroughfare. Due to lack of maintenance and social deterioration, the neighbourhood was long overdue for restructuring. Openness and diversity were the themes for the renovation. By demolishing a number of residences, we realised a line-of-sight relation from the ring road to the heart of the Schumanstede. Around this ‘heart’ of the neighbourhood, the residence clusters were given their own identity by utilising various themes. All houses involved in restructuring the Noorderpolder were also renovated internally, receiving new bathrooms and kitchens. The composition of the neighbourhood residents was also diversified by selling a number of the houses instead of renting them.
