A crucial starting point for the design of the city hall was to “maintain and, where possible, emphasise the unique features of the location” (downtown park). The new building resembles a pavilion. The closed sections of the facade are made entirely out of sandstone-coloured architectural concrete, making the most of the material’s plasticity. The public hall is located between the existing renovated building and the new wing. Along with a new entrance, the public hall also features a glass roof printed with leaves. The existing and new components of the building are connected by a “gallery” at the first floor level. The restaurant, which includes work and meeting areas (Praathuis), is also where the new lecture hall is located. This Praathuis is separated from the park by an intermediary landscaped conservatory area. In the office part of the new building, specific facilities and unique ambience have been created to suit the various types of work being performed. A visit to city hall is like taking a walk in the woods.
